There are many ways to become involved with Habitat for Humanity at UMBC.
- The best method is to join the email list; this will ensure that you don't miss any news! To join, just log into UMBC's email list management site and add yourself to the Habitat list.
- Another great way to get involved is to attend a general meeting. These meetings are held on a regular (weekly and/or biweekly) schedule throughout the school year.
- If email lists and meetings aren't quite your style and you'd like to get your hands dirty, contact the Workday Coordinator to see about attending a workday and helping to build a house!
- If there are no available workdays or school is not in session, you can still become involved with our local affiliate in Baltimore, Sandtown HFH.
And if you are graduating or seeking a career in social justice, there are many opportunities to fight homelessness and poverty housing. The list below is just a short sampling of the many opportunities that UMBC and Habitat alumni have followed.
- Several groups in Baltimore actively work towards abolishing homelessness and poverty housing, and also regularly hire college graduates. Chesapeake Habitat For Humanity regularly hires staff and AmeriCorps VISTA members to construct houses.
- YouthBuild USA is an organization dedicated to assisting and training underprivileged youth in the construction trade, helping them attain their General Equivalency Diplomas, and secure career positions in the industry, all set against the backdrop of building affordable housing and using the construction site as a place for growth and learning.
- AmeriCorps is a National Service Corps dedicated to serving America in several capacities. There are many different types of AmeriCorps programs, including VISTA and STATE programs (fulfilling your term of service in one position, one mission, working in cooperation with one organization, of your choosing), as well as *NCCC (National Civilian Corps) in which members travel around the country on spike projects, working in different capacities with different organizations to offer service to America.
Note: Many entry level positions among Habitat and YouthBuild chapters are AmeriCorps VISTA and STATE positions, and the AmeriCorps website is a great search tool to locate these opportunities.
